About Us

Responding to Hurricane Katrina

The School of Nursing took a multi-pronged approach to creating a plan to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. With the understanding that this initiative required several months of ongoing support, we created different types of opportunities for faculty, students and alumni to participate.

The following were some of our immediate actions:

Immediate:

On-site Assistance. Several of our faculty members were sent by the Red Cross to the disaster area.

Training: We worked with the Red Cross to offer disaster training for faculty, students, and alumni enabling them to register on the NYSNA web site as skilled volunteers.

Consultation. Faculty worked with the University of Rochester Medical Center and other professional organizations as part of a "virtual" system of consultation, triage, and referral.

Reaching out to Nursing Students. The School of Nursing, working with the American Association Colleges of Nursing (AACN), offered to bring displaced students into our programs to attend the School tuition-free for the fall semester.
Fund Raising. We coordinated efforts with the Medical Center and established a fund raising center staffed by student and faculty volunteers.
