Many hospitals/medical facilities offer a variety of educational benefits to nurses. Please check with the Human Resources office at your place of employment for information on their policies.

Forms requiring a signature from a school official confirming student status, enrollment dates, etc., should be brought to the Registrar’s Office (HWH 1-126) for signature. The Registrar forwards the completed form to the appropriate institution.

For MS students only. Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship Program Up to $20,000 annually or the average SUNY cost of attendance, whichever is less
The newly created Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship Program is available to practicing nurses who are working on a masters to become a nursing educator and commit to teaching in a nursing program in New York State following graduation. Payments for this scholarship are available for up to three years of study and recipients must complete their master's program within three years of receiving the scholarship. Applications for the scholarship are now available online at the Capwiz website.

For MS students only. Professional Nurses Network, Campus RN/AACN Nursing Scholarship Fund $2,500 (six awards annually)
Established in April 2003, this scholarship program supports students who are seeking a baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degree in nursing. Special consideration will be given to students Enrolled in a master's or doctoral program with the goal of pursuing a nursing faculty career; completing an RN to baccalaureate program (BSN); or enrolled in an accelerated baccalaureate or master's degree nursing program. Easy online submission (UR is an AACN member).

American Legion Scholarship
The Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Nursing Scholarship Fund
$3,000
Established to assist registered nurses (RN) with advanced preparation for positions in supervision, administration or teaching. Students are to have prospects of being employed in specific positions in hospitals, clinics or health departments on completion of their education and the position must have a full-time and direct relationship to lung and respiratory control.  Full details may be secured from the local Eight and Forty Scholarship Chairman or The American Legion Education Program, Attn: Eight and Forty Scholarships, PO Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46206.

Priority given to economically disadvantaged or historically underrepresented minority undergraduate and graduate students studying in 24 different professions at NYS schools.

AORN Foundation - Zimmer Chapter RNFA Grants $500 (four awards annually)
Through a generous donation by CBPN, four scholarships are available to nurses who plan to enroll in a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) educational program. Consideration will be given to applicants who can demonstrate completion of an RNFA program during the funding period. Dante Scholarship Varies

The Italian Women’s Civic Club funds and administers the Dante Scholarship Program, a series of four endowed scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study at the several Rochester colleges including the University of Rochester. The mission of the Club today focuses on supporting higher education opportunities for young adults of Italian ancestry.
Eligibility criteria:

  • Have academic standing as a sophomore or junior in an undergraduate degree program; or a senior accepted into a graduate degree program; or a full-time graduate student enrolled in a master’s level or doctoral program at the University of Rochester. 
  • Demonstrate and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent.
  • Be a legal resident or native of the Greater Rochester Area, including Monroe, Orleans, Livingston, Wayne, Ontario, and Genesee counties. 
  • Have some Italian heritage and be available and willing to attend the Dante Scholarship Ball and participate in one IWCC event that celebrates Italian American heritage.

Sharon Davies Memorial Awards - Research Grant Opportunities $10,000
The Sharon Davies Memorial Awards Grant was established in 2003 in memory of Sharon Davies a psychiatric nurse, a researcher and a staunch advocate for those who suffer from mental illnesses. In 1985, she became actively involved with Freedom From Fear. She was a primary source of advice and encouragement. The family, friends, and colleagues of Sharon created this program to provide grants to individuals to assist them in the area of mental health research. The program is particularly interested in novice researchers but all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. The grant awards $10,000 to a registered nurse or nurse practitioner employed in the mental health field in a research or clinical capacity. The candidate must have a mentor that is an established investigator supporting them in their research.

New York State Tuition Assistance (TAP) Up to $5,000/year for undergraduate students and up to $575/year for graduate students
State grant awarded to New York State residents who are matriculated in New York State schools on a full-time basis. Must be a New York State resident, matriculated in an accepted program, and enrolled full-time. Need-based grant.

Advanced Education Nurse Traineeship Grant (AEN) The amount of the AEN award is usually determined each summer after the level of funding from the federal government is announced.
Financial assistance for full-time graduate nursing students is available through University funds and the Advanced Education Nurse Traineeship Award (AEN). The United State Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, sponsor the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship. The purpose of the traineeship is to increase the number of MSN-prepared nurses in the United States. No payback of funds is required with this traineeship. Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans Maintenance grant of $20,000. Tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the U.S. graduate program attended.
Each year up to 2 years the Fellow receives a maintenance grant of $20,000 and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the U.S. graduate program attended. Graduate student in any professional field or scholarly discipline in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences.

Undergraduates (dependent) – $5,500/year
Undergraduates (independent) – $10,500/year
Graduate students – $18,500/year
Federal loans available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Loans are subsidized or unsubsidized, based on the student's need. Variable interest rate capped at 8.25%. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits, and matriculated.

Federal Plus Loans for Parents Maximum eligibility per year is the student's cost of attendance minus all other financial aid
Federal loan for parents of undergraduate students. Variable interest rate capped at 9%. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office. Both student and parent must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Parent must be approved for the loan based on his or her credit.

Alternative Loans  Maximum eligibility per year is the student's cost of attendance minus all other financial aid
Educational loans offered through private lending institutions. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply. Applications are available at the Financial Aid Office. Loans vary between lenders. Generally, an undergraduate student will need a cosigner in order to borrow. Student must be approved for the loan based on their credit or the credit of their cosigner.

Loan Repayment Programs

  • Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELRP)
    Provides up to 85% of student loan debt for nurses who work in eligible facilities located in areas experiencing a shortage of nurses. The purpose of the NELRP is to assist in the recruitment and retention of professional nurses dedicated to providing health care to under served populations. Determination of which eligible applicants will receive an award is based on a four-tier preference scale based on the availability of funds. A person who has received a baccalaureate or associate degree in nursing, a diploma in nursing, or a graduate degree from an accredited school of nursing is eligible.

  • National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program
    Fully trained health professionals, who are dedicated to working with the underserved and have qualifying educational loans, are eligible to compete for repayment of those loans if they choose to serve in a community of greatest need. In addition to loan repayment, these clinicians receive a competitive salary, some tax relief benefits, and a chance to have a significant impact on a community.
