Entrepreneurial Initiatives We are committed to action. Entrepreneurs succeed when they research business opportunities, honestly quantify them, and take carefully calculated risks. We live that philosophy in every area of endeavor, from learning, research, and clinical practice to incubating startup businesses.
The CNE Business Incubator helps health care entrepreneurs to start new businesses, from expert marketing and financial advice, to providing office space and technical support.
The University of Rochester now offers a range of courses for entrepreneurs, through Edvantage, the academic program of the School of Nursing, and other schools in the University.
The Center for Nursing Entrepreneurship is supporting academic research into entrepreneurship and the business opportunities and challenges faced by nurses and other health professionals.
The program provides nurses to community health agencies for consultation, program development, and clinical services. They include nurse administrators, practitioners, and wellness counselors.
Well Balanced promotes good health by informing and empowering persistently mentally ill adults to manage their own diabetes or other chronic illness. The Community Nursing Center developed it for the Monroe County, Office of Mental Health. Wyoming County Public Health adopted Well Balanced too, but extended it from diabetes to multiple chronic illnesses.
It focuses on eight elements of care:
Medications
Diet and nutrition
Physical activity
Skin care
Wellness assessments
Glucometry
Stress management
Screening and community resources
The Well Balanced team does not provide long-term care; its purpose is to improve the knowledge and skills of patients and their caseworkers, by “training the trainer.” The Center is now developing a workshop for case managers and other municipalities can buy the complete toolkit and turnkey package for their own use. The Well Balanced team also provides the consultation and support needed to make the program a winner.
